The arden:
Located near the geographic center of England, this densely forested area (often referred to as the Forest of Arden) was a culturally defined region that formerly encompassed much of Warwickshire and parts of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire. It was so thickly wooded that bears and wolves inhabited it and inspired artists like the Pre-Raphaelite John Collier. No Roman road penetrated it, but the Icknield Street, Watling Street and Fosse Way went around it, and a salt track passed through its south side.
It was also the home of the Knights Templar, who held a preceptory at Temple Balsall until their suppression during the 16th century and of many families with Catholic sympathies who retained lands in the vicinity. It may be the inspiration for Shakespeare’s “Arden” and the setting for his dramatization of the Gunpowder Plot.
Arden is the perfect place for hiking, biking, horseback riding and nature study. Our woods abound with wildflowers, birds and animals. The Arden Forest Committee maintains this natural beauty through regular woods cleanups, ivy “pulls” and other events. You can see what they’re doing on their public Facebook page, Forests of the Ardens.
The Arden Registration Committee has prepared a packet to introduce new residents to our community. It includes publications that tell about the history, government and organizations of this unique Village. You can view these and other publications on this website. You can also find information about upcoming town meetings and ordinances here.
