Fenbendazole is an effective treatment for a wide variety of parasites and worms including large strongyles, small strongyles, pinworms, hookworms, whipworms, and some tapeworms (Taenia Pisiformis and Trichuris Vulpis). It is available in palatable flavoured suspension or powder form that can be mixed with canned food. It is also well tolerated by dogs, with few reported side effects such as vomiting and loss of appetite. In pregnant dogs, extended fenbendazole treatment has been shown to be safe and effective in decreasing ascarid burdens.
Despite its effectiveness in eliminating many different parasites and worms, fenbendazole may also impact the immune system by reducing B cells and T cells. A number of experimental studies have demonstrated that fenbendazole can impact immune parameters such as antibody titer, natural killer cell activity, and cytokine production in the presence of soluble antigens.
These experiments often use unirradiated tumors, however there have been a number of reports that fenbendazole can affect the growth of radioactive cancer grafts as well. It is important that the research veterinary community recognizes the possibility of other unintended effects when facility treatments are instituted for pinworm control.
Despite this limited research, fenbendazole has been used as an integral part of the Joe Tippens Protocol for some time now. It is a medication that we compound at SVPMEDS for our clients at their veterinarians’ direction. We offer this medication in blue and white elongated capsules that are custom made for each pet.
